In a sense, the jazz supergroup heard on the album - saxist Joshua Redman, cornetist Ron Miles, bassist Scott Colley and drummer Brian Blade - is paying tribute to a tribute: Old and New Dreams, a quartet of Coleman associates, including Redman’s father Dewey, that performed music written and inspired by their trailblazing maestro in the Seventies and Eighties. Overall, the album plays like a longstanding promise fulfilled and a testament to the wisdom of waiting until you’ve got it exactly right. Is Starebaby even a jazz album? In some key ways, no.

Taken from the same concert that produced Lionel Hampton's famous "Stardust" solo, this second album actually has more Hamp (he dominates all six selections) but never reaches the heights of "Stardust. There are some fine moments from trumpeter Charlie Shavers, altoist Willie Smith and bassist Slam Stewart on such familiar material as "Perdido," "Hamp's Boogie Woogie" and "Flying Home," making it a worthwhile release.

Legitimate album releases only: no collections, compilations, singles, or EPs., Reissues, even those with tacked-on bonus tracks, qualify for inclusion. While we typically only allow one album per artist, due to the collaborative nature of jazz as an art form, and the drastically different styles played by single artists within one career, we will allow multiple albums by the same artists.
