Actually, he co-led the session with an old friend, altoist Phil Woods, who he did not have many opportunities to play with after the 1950s. The results are delightful, with some bop standards, a few Latin tunes, and some basic originals comprising the program. The instrumentation changes from track to track, with two different rhythm sections being used and guest appearances from Gil Goldstein on accordion and trombonist Jay Ashby.
This is a Herbie Mann discography. Mann spent his early years recording for a number of jazz oriented record labels, and signed with Atlantic Records in 1961. He recorded with them through the 1960s and 1970s, including their subsidiary Cotillion Records, where he ran his own imprint, Embryo Records, in the 1970s, for his records as well as other musicians. Mann also ran two independent record labels, Herbie Mann Music in the 1980s, and during the 1990s, Kokopelli Records. Minor reissues are not noted.
This is an album of rejoice and sadness, firstly it is the meeting of two old friends who starting playing together in 1951 in Tony's Bar on Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn, NYC and secondly it marks the final recording of the legendary, and much respected flautist Herbie Mann, to whom the album is dedicated. Dedicated to the spirit and music of flutist Herbie Mann, who died in 2003, Beyond Brooklyn documents a meeting of Mann and alto saxophonist Phil Woods more than 50 years after they first played together at Tony's Bar in Brooklyn in 1951. The flautist Herbie Mann got a raw deal from the more unforgiving of jazz fans during his rise to stardom in the 1970s, but history indicates he was being castigated for helping pioneer the vibrant movement that became fusion, preceding some of the directions taken by Miles Davis on Bitches Brew, and by Herbie Hancock, Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter. Though the element that Mann was probably more fairly criticised for - the flimsiness of his flute sound - is certainly not an impression dispelled on this session made for a Pittsburgh educational project at the end of his career
