Kenny Ken was the 1st ever Dj to rinse the Jungle sound In Australia over 10 years ago, he returns to Melbourne to host Jungle run 4 and treat us with a 100% Old Skool Set this Summer. in Melbourne over a decade ago which is no doubt one of the most memorable parties we have seen to date. I played at AWOL week in week out, the AWOL era is a huge part of my DJing career because that’s when I made my first tune called Everybody’s Friend which came out on Boogie Beat, then came Everyman which came out on Rugged Vinyl and was a huge release Kenny ken won the Jungle Soundclash and says he still retains.
Kenny Ken started DJing back in 1989,before that he was working as a ticket collector and railman on the London Underground. He got into playing music by going to the early warehouse parties like,Genesis,Sunrise,Biology,Energy and so on. I used to go to all the so called in crowd parties where DJ’s like Grooverider,Fabio,Frankie Valentine,Tony Wilson, Paul Oakenfold, Bones and Carl Cox used to play. It was while going to these all night parties and then having. career because that’s when I made my first tune called Everybody’s Friend which came out on Boogie Beat, then Everyman which came out on Rugged Vynil. I was also the first jungle DJ bring the music to Toronto Canada along with MCGQ. In 1994 I won the Jungle Soundclash. Yes I’ve still got the belt. I never got a chance.
Kenny Ken: I started playing jungle because of the reggae influence and the hip-hop beats. I lost my way a bit cos the music was changing into something that I wasn’t really feeling but yeah jungle kept me going. MF: I’ve read you’re into a lot of the more futuristic side of Jungle. Does this mean we shouldn’t expect any reggae-influenced tracks in your set at DNBBQ on Aug 8th? KK: Jungle isn’t just about ragga, it’s the sound that sets it apart from your regular D&B; simple beats with a heavy bassline
